Aphantasia

I have aphantasia. This means I'm "mind blind" and can not visualize a single thing inside my head. There are no objects. No recalling of faces. No colors. All I see is darkness at all times. To help remedy this I use references for 95% of my work and the rest is muscle memory (Hello three quarter canine heads!). Chibis are pretty much all I can wing but even that's difficult some days.Every single one of my drawings starts with a circle just so I can get something on the canvas I can actually see.I can't visualize a body sprinting but I have knowledge of what a body sprinting should look like. I can't visualize an apple but I know an apple is round and red with a stem. This is just enough to help me get into the realm of ideas of what I'd like to create. Descriptive writing can also be helpful.I spend a lot of time looking for and collecting various references I can splice together to help me achieve what I want to portray as close as I possibly can. As a result some of my sketches take hours to get to an acceptable place for me (tons and tons of redrawing and reworking) and it's not something I'm comfortable struggling with in stream or on video. It's very likely you'll never see my actual sketch process while I'm live unless I'm tweaking a YCH or getting close enough to the inking process that I'm okay with being watched. The struggle causes a great deal of anxiety and stress, especially if I'm being observed. It's exhausting. I can burn out pretty easily because of it and do my best not to kick the hornets nest.I also have a hard time comprehending any kind of actual color theory, so, I just paint what "looks nice". I'm not sure if this is a direct result of aphantasia or just my inability to retain things. I typically use a bit of a saturation to bring more life to my pieces when they're done. It's especially noticeable with my blacks which will pick up more of a deep purple tint.My "style" is mostly all over the place which I 100% accredit to the aphantasia and having to pull from so many different references all the time.I hope that answers a lot of questions about my process! I'm always happy to answer any inquiries you may have about what I'm doing while working on a piece and/or why.
